Eligibility

Our ability to accept a mission is dependent on the following factors:

  1. The children and families we transport must demonstrate a financial need for our services or a medical need that precludes the child from traveling via ground or commercial aircraft.
  2. The child must be ambulatory and in stable condition. We are not an air ambulance service. There is no medical equipment or personnel on board unless provided by the patient or otherwise arranged by the organization. We require medical approval from the child's primary physician prior to accepting any mission. We also require that at least one parent or guardian accompany the child in flight.
  3. Our home airport is in Sanford, NC, located west of Raleigh-Durham International airport. We can serve destinations within 600 nautical miles of the airport. In order to make the best use of our resources, we prefer flights that either originate or conclude within 200 miles of RDU. To illustrate via examples, we can accept a mission to fly a child from Greensboro, NC to Cleveland, OH. We can also accept a mission to bring a child from Nashville, TN back to Durham, NC. We cannot, however, normally accept a mission to carry a child from Nashville to Cleveland given neither the pickup nor destination lies within the 200-mile radius from RDU.
  4. If you are unsure whether your request falls within our geographic service area, please call us! We can often work with other volunteer pilot organizations to complete the mission in multiple legs or we will simply ensure that you are connected to a group that can manage the flight in its entirety.
  5. Our services are open to all children 18 and under regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion.

We own and operate a fixed-wing, twin-engine Cessna 414 that seats six people (including our two pilots!) The plane is pressurized and generally flies at altitudes up to 25,000 feet. This aircraft is capable of making nonstop flights to all destinations within our service.
