Program Services
Who do we fly? The children and families we transport must demonstrate a financial need for our services or a medical need that precludes the child from traveling via ground or commercial aircraft. In addition to demonstrating need for our service, the child must also be ambulatory and in stable condition. We are not an air ambulance service. There is no medical equipment or personnel on board unless provided by the patient or otherwise arranged by the organization. We require medical approval from the child's primary physician prior to accepting any mission. We also require that at least one parent or guardian accompany the child in flight.
Where do we fly? Our home airport is Raleigh-Durham International and we can serve destinations within 600 nautical miles of the airport. Our flights typically involve flying children from North Carolina to out-of-state treatment facilities or bringing children from out-of-state back to facilities in our local area. In order to make the best use of our resources, we prefer that our flights either originate or conclude within 200 miles of RDU. To illustrate via examples, we can accept a mission to fly a child from Greensboro, NC to Cleveland, OH. We can also accept a mission to bring a child from Nashville, TN back to Durham, NC.

We cannot, however, accept a mission to carry a child from Nashville to Cleveland given neither the pickup nor destination lies within the 200-mile radius from RDU. When we do get such requests, we make every effort to ensure that the family is connected to a volunteer pilot organization that can handle the flight in their region.

What do we fly? We own and operate a fixed-wing, twin-engine Cessna 414 that seats six people. The plane is pressurized and generally flies at altitudes up to 25,000 feet. This aircraft is capable of making nonstop flights to all destinations within our service area.

Who does the flying? Our group of volunteer pilots is highly qualified and specially trained to fly our aircraft. Each pilot has met stringent flight experience requirements that exceed those required by most other volunteer pilot organizations.

How much do we charge? Our services are absolutely free to the families we serve. Our pilots do not receive any compensation nor do they fund the flights they command. The funds we raise each year go in large part toward funding the direct costs of the missions we fly.
