Board of Directors

Our Board is ten members strong and growing! These wonderful volunteers bring a variety of skills and experience to our work in addition to their passion for serving children in need. As you would expect given our small staff, each of our board members is integrally involved in our operations and fundraising. All are highly valued and have enabled the exciting success that we have experienced over the last two years.

Mark Ash
Mark Ash joined our board in 2006 and is a partner in the law firm of Smith Anderson Blount Dorsett Mitchell and Jernigan. In his practice, Mark does primarily commercial litigation and aviation accident litigation. He has practiced law for 28 years and has been a pilot for 33 years. Mark’s wife is professor at NCSU and they have two children.
 
Adam Broome
Adam Broome joined the Board in September 2008. He is Vice President-Legal and General Counsel of Cree, Inc., a publicly-held manufacturer of lighting-class LEDs, LED lighting retrofit solutions, and semiconductor solutions for backlighting, wireless and power applications. Before being appointed Cree's General Counsel in 1995, Adam was a partner with the Petree Stockton law firm and was previously on the faculty of the School of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Adam is an instrument-rated pilot and plane owner and a member of the Board of Trustees of University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill.
 
David J. Byerley
Is a Sr. Vice President in the Commercial Banking Group with BB&T in Raleigh and is our current board treasurer. David joined our board in late 2005 after being involved in a volunteer role for several years with both the Pro-Am Golf Tournament and A Vintage Affair. David also serves as a Director of the Cary-MacGregor Rotary Club and is on the Membership Campaign Committee of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. David resides in Cary with his wife and two young daughters.
 
Peter Coode
Peter has practiced public accounting for 30 years.   He is a partner with PriceWaterhouse Cooper. Peter principally serves companies in the software, pharmaceutical, and technology industries. During his time as a partner, he has been responsible for auditing four companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and numerous other publicly held companies. During the course of his responsibilities, he has also coordinated services for his clients international operations located in Sweden, Germany, Indonesia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, France and Brazil, amongst other locations.
Mr. Coode has instructed national training courses in issues relevant to the audit practice and specific industry segments. He served as an area leader for the Firm's internal audit and strategic risk services practices; participated in in-depth training targeted for evaluating IT general controls; and devoted significant time to advising clients and non-clients on various aspects of Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 implementation. 
 
Rob Gooding
Rob Gooding joined the board of directors in July 2007. Rob has been involved with the organization as a volunteer and fundraiser since early 2000. He has served on the Pro-Am Golf Tournament committee as well as the event committee for A Vintage Affair. Rob is VP at Accentuate Staffing in Raleigh, one of the largest, locally owned staffing companies in the Triangle. Prior to that, he owned and operated Key Personnel for 10 years. He is married with a 4 year old daughter and 1 year old son.

Martin Seligson
Martin Seligson joined the board in 2005. He is the former CFO/COO of Business to Business, Inc. which publishes Business Leader Magazine and The Park Guide. Martin also serves on the Executive Committee for the Triangle Make-A-Wish Foundation and is a member of the Shepherd’s Table Soup Kitchen of Raleigh Board of Directors.
 
Benny Ward
Benny Ward has more than 15 years of financial, operations and management experience, primarily with medical device companies. Benny most recently served as VP of Finance and CFO of RTP based and venture backed InnerPulse, Inc.  Prior to joining InnerPulse, Mr. Ward spent more than nine years at Closure Medical Corporation, a world-leading, publicly traded developer and manufacturer of biomaterial-based medical adhesives that was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in June 2005.  He joined Closure Medical in 1996 as Controller and became Chief Financial Officer in 2000, serving as a key member of the management team from the Company’s successful initial public offering through its 2005 sale to Johnson & Johnson.  Before joining Closure Medical, he spent three years as an auditor for Price Waterhouse.  Benny also serves on the Advisory Board of the School of Business at East Carolina University and is an instrument-rated pilot.  
 
Abel Zalcberg, 2009-2010 Board Chair
Abel was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved to Brooklyn, New York with his family in 1964. After graduating from Long Island University with a degree in Marketing, Abel married his wife Barbara and has two children, Cara and Blake. Abel is currently the CEO of OFM, Inc. a manufacturer and distributor of office furniture with distribution points in Holly Springs, NC and Phoenix, AZ. While he has spent much of his career in the office furniture business, his professional interests do not end there. Abel is also the managing partner and owner of ABCZ Properties, LLC; a land developer of Industrial properties in Apex and Holly Springs, NC and additionally owns and manages Fly Private, LLC; a private charter company in Raleigh, NC. With a passion for travel, playing golf, sports, and ‘the art of the deal’, Abel also finds great pleasure in contributing to and being a part of charitable organizations and their missions.

Abel’s interests are Golf, Travel, Sports, and is a deal junkie.

We own and operate a fixed-wing, twin-engine Cessna 414 that seats six people (including our two pilots!) The plane is pressurized and generally flies at altitudes up to 25,000 feet. This aircraft is capable of making nonstop flights to all destinations within our service.
